If we don’t end war, war will end us” ~ H.G. Wells

For today’s blog, we’ll talk about what Elon Musk has done for Ukraine and its citizens. We are more dependent than ever on the internet, we use it for our everyday life. Sadly, many Ukrainians lost this privilege when Russia invaded them on February 20th, 2022. Many people evacuated their homes, left their jobs, and lost Internet service. Mykhailo Fedorov, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, pleaded with Musk for Internet access since the Russian/Ukrainian conflict began.

According to NationalWorld.com, Starlink is “a satellite-internet service maintained by Elon Musk’s company SpaceX”. For those who don’t know, Elon Musk is a well-known inventor, entrepreneur, and innovator. Since Fedorov’s plea, Musk provided Starlink services to Ukraine by late February. Ask and you shall receive. Fedorov thanked Musk via Twitter which garnered over 516K likes. Thanks to Musk and the pleas of politicians, Ukrainians are able to access the internet in a digital age. Everything revolves around technology. During these uncertain times, our phones and social media accounts keep us connected. Elon Musk’s gesture did provide some glimmer of hope that perhaps the internet will always be available even during times of chaos.

SpaceX was founded in 2004 and in 2014 Musk and his partner Greg Wyler discussed the idea of Starlink. However, that deal fell through but Musk continued his mission. It wasn’t until 2015, Starlink was born. As of 2022, Starlink provides internet to “29 countries” and it’s “possible for the satellites to offer internet coverage to most of the planet”. While it is hard to predict the future, Musk insists that Starlink will be available in most countries within the next few years.
